Scale Formation

Themal Decomposition of Hardness forming salts of Calcium and Magnicium, in Steam Generation Plants and Heat Transference Surface, cause the formation of crude white deposit. Sometimes greasy fatty oils, which may present in raw water storage along with silica mix and, form a difierent composition, which may hard or soft in nature, known as scale. lt may cause the retardation of production and increase in fuel consumption. The Necessity of treating water, used in steam generation, is most important, modern and is technical. We are all aware of the troubles, which develop, if feed water is used without proper dosing of conditioning chemicals.

Untreated water from any source contains various undissolved salts and gases to varying degree, problems emerge in the form of.
Scale formation and depsition on the heating surface.
Corrosion on the boiler metal.
1 Pitting inside the boiler.
Embrittlement on heating surface.
Above referred problems may create the unrequired troubles like.
Excessive fuel consumption.
Frequent replacement.
Unnecessary repairs and objections.

Further if they are allowed to exert their influence unchecked, it may result in costly shutdown for maintenance and resulting in loss of production.

Corrosion in Boilers

Reduction in Production Capacity

The Production capacity is reduced due to the scale formation because it retards the heat, flow from heating surface to water and the time period is increased due to the reason referred above.

Loss in evaporative capacity can be calculated in different boilers as below :

Therefore High Pressure Boiler will evaporate 2.1x4 - 8.4% less water per pound of coal in 4 weeks and similarly 11.6%, 14.6% and 18% will be less evaporated in Lancashire, and Loco vertical Boilers respectively.
